Jamaica is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich islands in the Caribbean. Explore the countryside and mingle with the locals, as they are friendly and truly delighted to meet and greet tourists who visit their island. The physical beauty and vibrant culture of Jamaica are still its greatest assets, and the good cheer among its people makes for a memorable vacation.
Known fondly as MoBay, Montego Bay is the second-largest city in Jamaica and the country's lively epicenter of tourism: Gloucester Avenue, known locally as the Hip Strip, parallels the shore and is the commercial tourist hub. Because it's a much larger city than Jamaica's other tourist areas, Montego Bay offers more in the way of sightseeing, shopping and nightlife.
Sights—Snorkeling and diving at Montego Bay Marine Park; visiting Dolphin Cove Negril in Lucea to become a dolphin trainer for a day. Ancient ruins, Dunn’s River Falls, and much more!
Museums—Rose Hall Great House, recalling the historic significance of the plantation-slave era; Croydon Plantation, granting a latter-day perspective on the workings of a modern sugar plantation.
Memorable Meals—Nouvelle cuisine at the Houseboat Grill International Restaurant; mouth-searing jerk chicken, pork or fish at Scotchies.
Late Night—Nonstop partying on the Hip Strip; letting your hair down at Margaritaville; the Monday-night street party on Gloucester Avenue; jazz and drinks at Blue Beat on the Hip Strip.
Montego Bay is all about the water. Visitors flock to the lovely beaches to indulge in sailboarding, fishing, snorkeling and glass-bottomed-boat tours.
Look for stores selling Jamaican items such as sauces, spices, jams, jellies, rum, Blue Mountain Coffee, cigars and herb teas. Works by Jamaican artists and craftspeople are delightful.
Our favorite time to visit Montego Bay is November-April—The temperature is fairly stable year-round. Temperatures in the hills and mountains are usually cooler than on the coast—take a sweater to wear at night. Hurricane season is June-November.
